about

Not too many people can say they see members of Lynyrd Skynyrd at their family reunions. The Kentucky Shades can say it. Growing up seeing a rock 'n roll band function first-hand, you can say that these four cousins are the Princes of Southern Rock. The Shades began their long fall to the bottom in 1994, in a basement in Gainesville, FL, when they learned a few songs for a family party, to honor their relatives who had died in a plane crash decades earlier. The band "serioused up," in the words of drummer Mike Van Zandt, and made three albums, one of which graced the Top 1000 on the Billboard Charts in 1996. Six world tours and an uncountable number of lines of cocaine later, the band called it quits in 1998. When interviewed by Spin, singer Scott Van Zandt said "there were just too many weird three-ways with groupies. When you have to see a cousin's nuts every night, eventually it gets to the point where it's weird." The band reformed briefly in 2003, playing two shows in Chicago, but quickly went back into hiding. Rumor has it that the band will grace fans with a show or two in 2006.
